Cystic Acne – How To Handle The Problem

Acne is a common skin condition that predominantly affects teenagers but can also affect people of all ages. It usually shows up on the face of the affected person although it can pop up over other parts of the body as well. Acne is generally harmless and will fade away with time. However, a more complicated form of acne is harder to treat and that is called cystic acne.

What is cystic acne?

Cystic acne leads to lesions which tend to leave scars and marks on the affected area. They are hard to mask or conceal with makeup as well. They can be painful and can also spoil a person’s external appearance, thereby affecting their confidence and self-esteem. The lesions look rather ugly and can make you feel depressed about your appearance.

Over the counter topical gels or ointments might not be of much help when it comes to cystic acne and you might need to contact your healthcare provider for more intensive treatments. External creams don’t seem to work on cystic acne because unlike regular acne, the problem lies beneath the skin’s surface. If left untreated, cystic acne can lead to bacterial infections and inflammation.

How to treat cystic acne lesions?

There are some ways that cystic acne can be treated professionally. Your doctor will be able to guide you in the right path. Some treatment options are:

Photodynamic Therapy

This method involves exposing the affected area to a blue or red LED light in a controlled setting. It is an expensive treatment option which also entails follow-up visits to the doctor’s office, but many people swear that it is very effective to treat cystic acne once and for all.

Oral Medications

Antibiotics may be prescribed by your doctor that can help keep the acne under control. Alternatively, a drug called Isotretinoin is also used to treat acne. This drug works on the oil glands of the body and inhibits oil production. However this drug should only be taken under strict medical supervision since it is known to have several side effects.

Hormone Therapy

Often cystic acne can be a result of hormonal imbalances especially in older women. In such cases, after a proper diagnosis, you could go for hormone therapy where some drugs are used to control and limit the hormones which are responsible for triggering acne.

Quick tip: If you want an instant, albeit temporary, solution, then you can try rubbing a cube of ice over the acne spots. This will calm down the redness by restricting the underlying blood vessels. Most importantly, do not try to squeeze out the cystic acne lesions as this will only aggravate the problem.

Tips for people suffering from cystic acne

Always use good quality and reliable cosmetics and skincare products. Do not use heavy or thick creams and moisturizers as they will clog your pores. Try to gently steam your face in order to open up the pores and release any accumulated dirt. Never use any harsh scrubs to cleanse your skin.

Maintain good personal hygiene and also follow a proper skincare routine regularly. Pay attention to what you feed your body as well since there is a connection between your inner gut health and your external appearance. Include probiotics in your diet and also stay hydrated.
